Blueberries in season at McDonald’s
Fast-food giant McDonald’s is launching a fresh angle this week with a seasonal promotion built around blueberries.
The Packer, a trade publication of the fresh fruit and vegetable industry, reports that through Aug. 3 the chain will offer fresh blueberries for oatmeal.
Naturipe Farms LLC, based in Naples, Fla., is supplying the berries, though McDonald’s said supplemental supplies will come from Mexico.
“It is fantastic to see blueberries expand in distribution and reach into new channels,” Naturipe’s Robert Verloop told The Packer.
Mark Villata, executive director of the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council, said the seasonal use by McDonald’s will keep the fruit on consumers’ minds during the season, which should translate into increased sales.
McDonald's employees open the packs and put the berries on the oatmeal, according to McDonalds, and the berries will only be available with the oatmeal promotion. McDonald’s fruit and maple oatmeal, which includes fresh apple pieces, is still available.
